The Second-Hand Car

the body breaks down

without anyone

realising. like a hole

in the heel

of quite comfortable

shoes. like driving a car

that you bought second hand –

you get used to finding

solutions.

the clutch must be placed

just like so,

then like so.

the radio takes

a light thump to get going.

which gears stick, and ways

you must press to release them.

the lights to ignore. the ways

to move on.

once I was driving

and the brakes

went out suddenly.

I slid off the highway

like kicked aside shoes.

had a pain in my ribs

and a cough for a couple

of days now.

I'm not very worried.

I'm probably fine.
